Aari work is hand embroidery done with a hooked needle on fabric stretched over a wooden frame. The hook pulls thread through in a chain stitch, and beads, sequins, zari and stones are attached along the way. It is the traditional embroidery used on South Indian bridal blouses.

They are the same technique. Aari is the Tamil name and maggam is the Telugu name for the frame. Zardosi is a related style that uses metal wire and is often combined with aari work on bridal blouses. Read more on our blog.
